Dr.
Richard Bayley

in Connecticut of English and French ancestry, Richard Bayley
was a brilliant physician, a scholarly researcher and skilled
surgeon. He taught anatomy and surgery at King's College (now
Columbia) but his greatest passion was as a practitioner serving
the sick, especially the poor.
Dr.
Bayley became the first Health Officer of the Port of New
York. While caring for immigrant victims of yellow fever at
the quarantine station near Tompkinsville, Staten Island, he
contracted a fever and died in 1801. He is buried in St. Andrew's
churchyard in Richmond Town, Staten Island.
Her
father's death was one of Elizabeth Seton's greatest sorrows.
They were kindred souls, sharing a delight in literature and
music, and a deep compassion for the poor and suffering.
